The reader is also introduced to the places the crew is restoring, learning more about the world the graphic novel is built around. As the book progresses, the reader sees Mia get comfortable in her new position and become closer to the other members of the crew. The book features flashbacks that focus on Mia’s past, her schooling, her relationship with a schoolmate named Grace, and what brought her to where she is when the book begins. Jules is to be Mia’s roommate and she has only been with the others for about a year, which makes her feel like an outsider most of the time. The book begins with Mia’s arrival and her instruction to the crew: Alma, Jules, Charlotte, and Elliot (who is non-binary). In the context of the book, her team restore abandoned ships and other places across the galaxy. On a Sunbeam follows Mia who is the newest crew member on a ship of restorers.
